Improve Fashion

Rework what you already have in your closet.

If you're stuck in a fashion rut, it's time for a total makeover. Fortunately, you can improve your look without spending thousands of dollars on designer duds. Embrace what you already have in your closet, but upgrade your look. Your fashion should represent who you are, so find looks that capture your style and flatter your body type. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine what kind of look you're going for. If you work a 9-to-5 job, you will need work-friendly attire, such as trousers and business suits, applicable for both men and women. If you're a busy mom or dad on the go, casual, easy-to-wash clothes are best. Think about the types of clothes you wear day in and day out, and this will guide your fashion makeover.

2. Assess your current wardrobe. Go through your closet and identify pieces that will work for your new look. A traditional business suit, pencil skirts and a little black dress are classics women's looks that will work with any style. Men can mix and match pleated or flat-front pants and shorts, golf shirts and button-down shirts. Toss any clothes that are worn or dated -- that pair of bellbottoms won't do you any good, except maybe for a Halloween costume next year.

3. Build up your wardrobe with classic pieces. This mix-and-match pieces will work for formal and casual events. Every woman needs a little black dress -- choose one that hits around the knee so that it's appropriate for the office and social events. Button-down shirts, cardigans and a colorful array of blouses, long-sleeved, short-sleeved and sleeveless, are basics to start with. Every man needs a well-tailored suit, which he can wear for business and formal occasions alike. Stock up on button-down shirts, both patterned and solid, work-appropriate pants and comfortable chinos for the weekend.

4. Punch up your look with trends that work for you. You don't want to look too trendy, however. Instead, choose a trend and mix it with your classics. If you're a woman who can rock those on-trend skinny jeans, pair them with a classic pair of black pumps and a soft, feminine blouse for a night on the town. A man might be able to pull off a leather jacket -- but wear it with a nice pair of jeans and button-down shirt rather than a matching pair of leather pants.

5. Stock up on accessories. Accessories can turn even a basic outfit into something memorable. Women can transform ordinary jeans and a T-shirt into a fashionable look by pairing it with a statement necklace or colorful scarf. Everything from your jewelry to scarves, handbags and hair accessories can add some life to a woman's wardrobe. Men can use ties, bow ties, hats or belts in their wardrobe to make it as casual or formal as necessary.
