I Turned My Bedroom Into A Walkin Closet & Need Ideas For A Wall Shoe Rack

Avoid this unsightly shoe jumble with wall-mounted shoe racks.

If you have enough couture to turn a bedroom into a walk-in closet, you probably have a costume museum amount of shoes. Naturally, your collection has stunning examples of footwear that are mini-sculptures and deserve a curatorial storage solution. Keep those pretty shoes out where you can see them but keep them off the floor with wall-mounted shoe racks that transform your closet-room into a gallery. Does this Spark an idea?

Painted Molding

Attach rows of painted decorative molding to the wall and hook heels over the lip. The shoes hang, toes down, on the wall, arranged by color, season or style. It's easy to spot the perfect shoe to coordinate with your outfit, find shoes in need of repair, and keep pairs together so you are not fighting dust bunnies under the bed searching for a stray.

Industrial Chic

Position a glass shelved, galvanized metal storage unit against a wall and secure it with two brackets near the top so a quick grab for ceiling-high shoes won't unbalance it. The glass shelves allow light through so shoes on lower shelves aren't shadowed and forgotten. For a really big collection, several matching shelf units could be positioned against walls where they are visible but out of the way.

Recycled Magazine Racks

If your favorite fashion magazine went belly-up and you get your fashionista fix online, use those old magazine display racks for your shoes. In a walk-in closet room, position the shelves stacked one over the next up one wall. Or, spread them around the room at eye level to make it easy to find the perfect pair for the weekend. Paint the racks white to match white walls and the shoe colors and patterns will really pop. Set clunky shoes that don't fit in the racks on the shelf below the slats and line up boots in boot trays below the racks.

Crate Idea

Attach old apple or wine crates to the wall in a block of cubbies to hold all kinds of shoes. The crates are picturesque and work in country, industrial, eclectic and funky-retail-store walk-in closet decor styles. Use the natural wood, if it isn't too badly stained, but seal the inside with clear lacquer so the "shelves" are easy to wipe down. Or, paint the whole thing to blend into the wall color -- although painting obliterates the charm of the crates. If you have a lot of boots, stack the crates vertically to accommodate tall pairs.
