Install Cedar Wood In Closets

Placing cedar wood in your closet prevents moth holes.

Cedar is a reddish, aromatic wood that repels moths and other insects, making it an ideal choice for closets. While your home may not have a cedar closet, it takes only a small amount of woodworking knowledge to add cedar paneling to an existing closet. Cedar paneling is designed to be installed in any home closet and it is simpler and faster to install than cedar planks. Use cedar waferboard paneling, which is available at your local hardware or home improvement store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closet. Unscrew any shelves in the closet using a screwdriver.

2. Wash the walls with soap and water and allow them to dry.

3. Locate the studs in the wall using a stud finder and mark those spots at the floor and the ceiling with a pencil. You will need to be able to see those marks after a cedar panel has been attached to that wall.

4. Measure the height and width of each wall, then subtract 1/4 inch from each measurement.

5. Cut cedar waferboard panels that match the dimensions you found in Step 4 using a circular saw. Depending on the size of the closet, you may need two or more rectangles of paneling for each wall.

6. Leave the panels in the closet for 24 hours, allowing them to expand as necessary.

7. Apply a layer of panel adhesive to one side of the cedar waferboard panels.

8. Push the panel to the wall, leaving 1/8 inch between the panel and the corners, ceiling and floor of the closet. Cedar will continue to expand, and this gives it the room to do so.

9. Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for all the other panels.

10. Allow the panel adhesive to cure completely. The adhesive's packaging will tell you how long this takes.

11. Secure the panels to the walls using a hammer and nails, placing the nails where you have marked the studs.
