Men'S Closet Organizing Ideas

Organize a man's closet with careful planning and the purchase of the right tools.

Taking a look into a man's closet can be a harrowing experience. It might contain gym clothes thrown in one corner, work clothes hung shoddily on bent wire hangers and T-shirts stuffed into tiny drawers. There are many tips for organizing a man's closet that will keep his clothes from taking over the small space. Consider organizing a man's closet as a surprise to him when he is at a friend's house or at work. Does this Spark an idea?

Pick and Choose

One way to help your organizing process right at the beginning is to create a pile of non-seasonal clothes that a man has worn in the last six months and a pile of the clothes he hasn't worn.

If the clothes haven't been worn because they don't fit or they aren't his style anymore they can be given to thrift stores and other clothing donation locations.

If they might be worn in the future, they should be put into a storage box in the garage or basement and properly labeled. Either way, removing the clothes that aren't getting worn will lead to an extreme reduction in clutter.

Write It Down

While your clothes are still in a pile, create a list of all the clothes in the man's closet. This should include all shirts, all ties, all pants, literally everything in the closet. This is a time-consuming task but it can be eye-opening. This can further whittle down what a man actually needs in his closet.

For example, a man might not need three similar-colored fleece jackets if he just wears the same one over and over again. Also, this can help to show how much space is actually needed and if the current closet configuration can handle all of the clothing.

Uniform Hangers

Many closets (men's and women's alike) consist of many different types of hangers including plastic, wooden and wire. Because plastic hangers can break easily and wire hangers tend to bend, it is best to invest in a set of wooden hangers for all of your clothes.

This will make sure that the closet looks more uniform and they will keep clothes from warping like wire hangers do. It also gives a closet a cleaner look that a mix of different types of hangers would not.

Measure and Diagram

Measure the dimensions of the closet to determine what kinds of organizational tools could fit in there. Create a diagram with these measurements. This is especially important with closets that might have an odd shape.

Bring the diagram to a store such as Target or The Container Store. Because you took such specific measurements, you will not have to worry about buying the wrong size or too many organizers.

Try purchasing a several compartment drawers for T-shirts and a tie and belt rack for ties and belts if they will fit in your space.
