Build Drawers On Wheels

Paint the drawer or keep it unfinished for a rustic look.

If you're looking for a convenient storage solution for your closet floor or underneath your bed, drawers with wheels work well. They keep items tidy and are easy to move around. For a few dollars, a trip to the hardware store and an hour or two, you can make your own portable and versatile drawers customized to your desired size and style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut a 1/4-inch-wide dado along the inside of each 1-by-4-inch side piece for your drawer, using a router or another tool capable of cutting a groove. Make the trench about 3/8 inch deep and 3/8 inch from what will become the inside bottom of the drawer side. Repeat this for all four sides.

2. Check that the bottom piece fits snugly into all four sides. Set it in place with wood glue on the inside edges of each corner and along the edge of the bottom piece's perimeter.

3. Hammer two to three finish nails into each corner to secure the drawer sides. Turn the drawer over and nail along the perimeter to secure the bottom to the sides. Repeat this with all drawers.

4. Mark where you want to place your drawer knobs or drawer pulls. Position the hardware where you want it placed on the drawer face and mark the screw holes carefully. Drill holes of a size that will accommodate the hardware screws.

5. Sand any rough patches to smooth the surface and prevent the contents of the drawer from snagging.

6. Paint the drawers in one or more colors. Experiment with antiquing, glazing or other finishing techniques, or paint each one a bold hue. Let the paint dry completely. If you prefer, leave the drawers unfinished for a rustic look.

7. Turn one of the drawers upside down. Screw a small castor onto one corner using small screws or included hardware, following the manufacturer's instructions. Repeat this with the other three corners on the drawer, and each of the drawers.

8. Attach the knobs or drawer pulls per the package instructions. Most models involve securing the hardware with screws from the inside of the drawer.
