Sliding doors work on a track mechanism. They slide from wheels, or rollers, on the tops of the doors. The doors hang down from the tracks, which means the tracks have to be attached to a ceiling, wood beam or wood frame usually dropped from the ceiling. Another alternative is to hang the sliding doors from the bottom of existing cabinets. Attach the sliding door tracks to the bottom of the cabinets to hide the storage area underneath the cabinets. Instructions
1. Attach the brackets with the wheels to the tops of the closet doors. There are two wheels for each door, one at each end. The wheels and brackets simply screw into the door.
2. Hold the track flat against the bottom of the cabinets, the ceiling or the wooden frame. If you're attaching the tracks to the bottom of the cabinets, the bottom of the cabinets should be 80 inches off the floor since that's the height of most closet doors. If there is less room beneath the cabinets, ceiling or wooden frame, you'll have to cut the doors to fit the space. Or you can use plywood cut to the correct height instead of doors.
3. Mark where the holes are in the track onto the bottom of the cabinet, ceiling or wooden frames.
4. Drill holes that are slightly narrower than the screws that come with the tracks into the bottom of the cabinet, ceiling or wooden frame.
5. Place the track back up flat against the bottom of the cabinets, ceiling or wooden frame, so the holes in the tracks match the holes you just drilled in the cabinets.
6. Screw the tracks in place. If the top end of the screw goes completely through the cabinet wood and shows up inside the cabinet, fasten it with a nut for extra stability. When screwing the tracks into the ceiling or a wooden frame, you won't have this problem.
7. Lift the closet doors so the sliding wheels of one door fit on the first lip of the track. Lift the second door so it fits on the second lip of the track. The lips both face toward the inside of the closet - or, in this case, the storage area.
