A Guide To Closet Designs

Your closet can be a place of mayhem or order, depending on how you design it.

There are countless designs available for closet space. However, depending on the amount of space you have available and your intentions for the closet, there is a basic guide you can follow when designing your next closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Size

If you have enough space for a walk-in closet, you have more freedom with the internal design. However, if you are renovating an existing small closet or are punching out a wall to create one, you will need to get more creative in terms of shelving and storage options.

Comparison

If it is available, examine other closets in your home. Are they too shallow or too deep? Are there areas that you cannot reach or don't use? Maybe you need more hanging room and less storage room, or vice versa. Compare your new closet space to existing ones to see how you can make the most of your new closet.

Lighting

It can be useful to consider installing a lighting fixture in your closet, even if it is only a cheap battery-powered light. However, if you have a walk-in closet or one of substantial size, you might want to consider having a light switch installed in your closet that is easily accessible.

Organization

The key to a well-designed closet is one that has a clear system of organization. You should be able to see exactly where hanging items go, folded items are stacked, and shoes and accessories are to be placed. A closet that is designed haphazardly will only turn into a disaster within a few weeks, as opposed to one that is designed with organization and function in mind.

Custom Closet

For those of you who are not prone to order and cleanliness, hiring a professional closet service is ideal. A trained professional will come into your home, examine your closet space and recommend a certain design of closet that will best suit your needs. This can be costly, however, especially when compared to a do-it-yourself closet design kit.
