Build A Closet For A Kitchen

Building a kitchen closet is a useful project and can offer ample storage space for food, cleaning supplies and more. You might even want to use a kitchen closet to hold homework or craft supplies. Many kitchens do not have a pantry but may have space for a freestanding kitchen closet, or you might be able to actually build in a kitchen closet if you have the space for it. Expect this woodworking project to take a weekend, but when you are finished, you will have a kitchen pantry. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Build a Closet for a Kitchen

1. Decide whether you want a built in or freestanding kitchen closet. Take lumber sizes into account.

2. Sketch out the dimensions for your kitchen pantry. Look at the available space and be sure to allow room for walking and maneuvering around the closet area.

3. Frame your built in kitchen closet using 2 inch by 4 inch board lumber (see Resources). To build a floor to ceiling closet, install your soleplate, screwing this securely into the floor joists. Use a plumb bob to mark the position for your top plate, holding it above the soleplate until it dangles evenly in the center to align the top and sole plates properly. Nail studs into place at all corners and every 16 inches around the closet, leaving an opening for the prehung door.

4. Install drywall on the inside and outside of your wall studs using small nails. Tape all drywall seams with drywall tape. Mount your prehung kitchen closet door according to manufacturer's directions.

5. If you are making a freestanding closet, build a simple but secure plywood box, reinforced with angle brackets. Use simple hinges to hang one or two doors as you prefer.Consider vintage shutters or screen doors. Add short legs or feet if desired.

6. Paint or finish the interior of your kitchen closet. Choose an easily cleaned finish for convenient maintenance. Paint and finish your shelf boards to match.

7. Mark the position for each shelf on the wall. Install shelf brackets, screwing them securely into place and double checking position with a level. Screw the shelves into place on the brackets.
