Avoid Clothes Fading In A Closet

Proper storage prevents fading.

Storing your clothes properly helps them last longer, saving you money and frustration. Clothes often fade because of repeated washing or dry cleaning, but storing your wardrobe carelessly can also contribute to fading. For example, exposure to light degrades fabric over time, especially delicate materials such as silk. Check the conditions of your closets to make sure your stored clothes stay vibrant and attractive as long as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Keep both artificial and natural light from entering your closet. Turn the light off when you aren't using the closet and keep the closet door closed. If you have skylights in your closet, cover clothes to prevent direct sunlight.

2. Arrange garments you don't wear regularly next to each other. Cover them with a clean, unbleached cotton sheet to prevent any light from reaching them. Covering clothing also prevents dust from damaging the fabric. You can also cover clothes you wear regularly, but you will have to remove the sheet to access them, so it may be more practical to only cover clothes that you wear infrequently.

3. Consider moving items you don't wear regularly, such as out-of-season clothing, to a separate closet filled only with rarely worn clothing, so these items will not get any light exposure.
