Instructions

The Process

1. Take a paper and a pencil and draw the closet. The diagram should include details like the measurements, the number of shelves inside the closet and the external look of the closet. If you purchased birch doors or pine doors, make sure they match the other doors in the room.

2. Cut the wood sheets with the circular saw according to your desired measurements and fasten them with nails and glue. Make adjustments to the measurements to accommodate any air ducts or electrical boxes. If you plan to add lights to the closet, locate the electrical boxes and decide where you will put the lights.

3. Mark points on the wall where you want to place the closet. Then use a drill to create holes. Use the drill to drive the nails through the wood. Fasten the closet to the wall with screws, making sure that it is firmly attached to the wall. Roll back the carpet and tape down any vinyl or hardwood floor with heavy paper to save them from damage.

4. Install knobs or handles, per your design. Use hand tools to do the installation. You can use wood putty to conceal any noticeable screw holes. Rub the closet surface using sandpaper to make it smooth. Use a nail gun to make your job faster and easier. If you don't have a nail gun, rent one from a home department store as well as a compressor, which you will need to frame the closet walls.

5. Use hinges to fasten the door to the sides of the closet. Also make sure that doors open and close with ease. Use three-inch screws to join the newly purchased wall plates and studs to the previous framing members.

Paint the clothes cabinet. Consider choosing a color that matches the background wall and the closet knobs.
