Homemade Closets

Create a closet in areas with additional space.

If you want excess storage, need to get organized or desire a customized space, a homemade closet is a great option for you. Homemade closets work best in areas of your home where you have extra floor space. If you do not have additional space, you can use your imagination to transform any area of your home into a closet. Carpentry skills will allow you to be more creative, but are not necessary to create this space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn your alcove into a closet. Alcoves are secluded areas within a larger space. Since they are already built-in, alcoves are easy to transform into closets. Add shelves to your alcove for instant storage. Since alcoves are narrow, use the entire length to maximize storage space.

2. Transform the space underneath your stairs into a closet. Stairwells generally have additional space underneath them. Use this space to store books, movies, shoes and accessories.

3. Turn your garage into a large closet. Garages already have walls, floors, roofs and doors, which makes them a great space for a homemade closet. Most individuals use garages to store large items, but you can designate space in your garage to store shoes, coats, bed linens and toys.

4. Use an armoire. If you have an old armoire sitting around, transform it into a closet. Armoire's are large and very tall, which makes them ideal for storing a variety of items. Use this space for folded shirts, jeans or towels. You can also store tall items, such as mops, brooms and vacuum cleaners. Use the flat space on top of the armoire for additional storage.
