Remodel A Pantry Closet

Rows of similar items look orderly and artistic in a pantry closet.

A closet off the kitchen is a bonus for the renovator. With a few shelves, some paint and a new or old door, it becomes an accessible and stylish pantry, an old-fashioned and practical idea that's a rarity in a modern home. Clear the counters and keep essential and seldom-used kitchen items within easy reach with a pantry closet remodel. Find a classic screen door to add a touch of character to your reclaimed, re-purposed space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the closet door and any hooks or hanging bars from the closet interior. Wipe down the interior and repair holes or marks with a putty knife and joint compound. Prime the entire interior, including the ceiling. Paint the closet interior with an eggshell or low-gloss finish latex paint. Choose the color to match laminated adjustable shelves for a uniform look.

2. Cut and glue a single piece of linoleum for the floor. Use a utility knife to cut the linoleum to fit the closet floor. Follow instructions for the adhesive --- some require time to set before you may place the linoleum over the glue. Once the linoleum is glued in place, go over it with a kitchen rolling pin, using your weight to push any air bubbles out to the edge of the floor. Let the linoleum dry or cure for the specified time listed on the adhesive. Then run a line of clear-drying silicone from a squeeze tube around the edge of the linoleum where it meets the closet wall.

3. Install metal brackets for adjustable shelving on the closet walls. Use a drill to make the holes for screw anchors and tap the anchors in lightly with a hammer. Screw on the wall standards, slot in the brackets and set the pre-cut shelves on the brackets.

4. Stock the pantry shelves with like items together and create a visible tableau of ordered, neat storage. If the closet has no light fixture, place a stick-on, battery-operated light on the front of the closet ceiling, nearest the door.

5. Hang a vintage screen door from a thrift store, construction salvage, online seller or country flea market to replace the old closet door.
