Kid Closet Organizing Design Ideas

Much to the chagrin of many parents, kids' closets are often prone to becoming disorganized. To increase the likelihood that your child's closet space remains neat, tidy and useful, spend some time modifying the design of this space. By adding some organization-ready elements to your child's closet space, you can make it easier for your child to use the space effectively and improve the chances of the closet remaining mess free. Does this Spark an idea?

Sports Section

If your kid is a lover of sports, his rough-and-tumble sports duds might leave his closet a mess. Prepare to house these potentially dirty pieces of sporting equipment by setting up a sports section in your child's closet. Section off a corner of the closet and place a hanging rod and several cubby holes in it, or make your sports section even more thematically appropriate by creating it with the addition of a locker-room-esque locker complete with your little slugger's name and jersey number.

Laundry Sorting Station

Make the task of tending to your child's dirty garments easier by creating a station that she can use to sort these in-need-of-washing items. Create space containing two or three bins, and label each bin with the type of garment that your child should place in it. For example, one could be "lights" and another "darks." Teach your kiddo use these bins so that they do not go to waste.

Day-of-the-Week Shelves

If you, like many thoughtful moms, lay out your child's clothing each day, create a spot in you child's closet specifically for this. Purchase a hanging sweater rack that has at least five compartments. Label each compartment with a day of the week or number them so that you can rotate between the seven days. Fill these compartments with outfits at the beginning of the week or place clothes in them as needed throughout the week.

Out-of-Reach Storage Shelves

Because your child can't reach a high rack, you may wish to place lower racks for him to use. If you do, don't waste the space that remains, but instead, use it for storage shelving. Place one or more shelves above the rack and use them for out-of-season clothing or toys and other odds and ends. To make these shelves even more useful, place baskets on them into which you can slip items instead of stacking them.
