Laundry Room Painting Ideas

Laundry rooms are often forgotten in home remodeling.

Most laundry rooms feel disconnected from the rest of the house. The personalization and careful decoration that goes into the kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedrooms often falls short in low-traffic areas such as the laundry room. However, this space is where you spend a lot of time and thus deserves, at minimum, a fresh coat of paint. Make your laundry room welcoming by using color and texture to make it feel less like a closet and more like a working retreat. Does this Spark an idea?

Durability

Before you even consider color and texture you'll want to have durability in mind. Choose a high-quality washable paint because the walls will often come in contact with water, soap, bleach and dirt.

Whitewash

Go for a pristine look in all white. A crisp coat of white paint works well in a room with natural or artificial lighting. Be wary of any imperfections in wall surface as they will make your room look dingy. Set off a white wall with an interesting painting.

Cool Colors

Wash away your cares with a relaxing, cool laundry room. Blues, greens and purples are soothing colors. Lighter hues will reflect more light, making the space seem more open and airy. Try an ocean blue base with white trim for a coastal look; or a bold forest green to accent woodwork. Coordinate your laundry room items (wicker baskets, wooden clothes pins, shelving, etc.) to match your theme.

Mellow Moods

Laundry rooms with a lot of natural light will look their best dressed in cream and yellow. These colors are warm and inviting, yet soothing to the eyes. Consider using a striped pattern to soften the yellow tones. Avoid beige and tan colors in the laundry room because they highlight dust and grime. Frame your light source with curtains and a windowbox to enhance the mood.

Texture

If you have an old laundry room suffering from holes, dents, scrapes and unfashionable paneling, textured paint is the cure. Buy premixed texture paints or add granular texturizer to your own latex paints. You can also achieve interesting looks by stippling, wiping paint with a wet rag, painting over wrinkled tissue paper and using your hands (or your kid's hands) as paint stamps.

Murals

Poster

If you have the talent and time, painting a mural on your laundry room wall is one option to consider. Thematic pieces featuring laundry, clothing, cleaning, home, family and water are all appropriate. You can prep the wall for a poster by painting a frame or border onto the wall. This can have a startling effect particularly in a plain or uniform room design.
