Minimum Size
The minimum size for any walk-in closet is at least five feet wide and five feet long. Any smaller, and it is hard to call the closet a walk-in. This basic, minimum size allows enough room for someone to walk into the space while selecting their clothing or items. While it does not provide a great deal of walking space, it is big enough to consider the closet a walk-in. Without at least this much room, it is hard to enter the closet at all.
Shelving Dimensions
There needs to be at least two feet of space along the back wall to hang your clothing properly. This two foot space requirement allows shirts and suits to hang perpendicularly without touching the wall itself. It is a standard measurement for any closet. If you decide to hang jackets in the closet, 28 inches of space is necessary. This measurement also provides plenty of space for additional shelving to store sweaters, sweatshirts and folded clothing.
Size Considerations
Some walk-in closets need more space to be effective. If the closet is for one single person, a smaller size will suffice. Any size from five feet square to six feet square is plenty of space. For two people, a much larger closet is necessary. One that is at least seven feet wide and five feet deep is needed. Consider the size of the room, as well, when choosing your walk-in size, since the closet is built into the existing space. In larger homes with very large bedrooms, a bigger walk-in closet up to 12 feet long and 15 feet wide is a possibility. In smaller homes with small bedrooms, walk-ins that stick to minimum measurements are more efficient, because this leaves more room in the bedroom itself.
Rod Lengths
In walk-in closets, one way to determine the dimensions of the closet is to consider how much closet rod space you will need. Since closet rods are hung across one wall, your walk in dimensions can follow the closet rod length. It typically takes four feet of closet rod space to hang up clothing for a single individual. So, if the closet is for two people, make room for eight feet of rod space. This may be accomplished with two rods hung one on top of the other, in four feet of space. Usually, people with more clothing choose to have eight feet of space for each person, or two sets of double hung rods that are four feet long.
