If you have ever had a bifold closet or hallway door out of alignment, you know how frustrating it can be to adjust the door correctly. Bi-fold doors are designed to fit in places where regular swinging doors will not fit. They are most commonly used in closets, pantries and occasionally between rooms. They come in two basic configurations. Two-door panels can be hinged together to create one singular folding door. Or a pair of these folding doors are placed together and open in the middle. The convenience and ease of accessibility makes keeping your bi-fold doors maintained worthwhile. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Adjusting Misaligned Door
1. If the bifold door is not aligned properly, it will stick when you fold it open. To check the alignment of the door, close it and see if the top of the door is aligned with the bi-fold track. The track is the metal piece running along the top of the frame of your closet door.
2. To align the door, slide it open. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the set screw at the top of the pivot bracket. The set screw is the singular screw that attaches to a metal plate that attaches inside the bi-fold track. It is located in the upper left-hand corner of your left bi-fold door. It is located in the upper right-hand corner of your right bi-fold door.
3. Adjust the alignment of the door until you see that it lines up correctly with the bi-fold track. Tighten the set screw, and test the door to see if the door is no longer sticking when you close it.
4. It may take a few attempts before the doors line up correctly. Keep adjusting until you are satisfied the door no longer sticks.
Pivot pin replacement
5. The pivot pin is the nylon pin that sticks up from the top of the bifold door. Sometimes it has worn away enough where it is no longer sliding properly in the bi-fold track. To get started replacing this pin, remove the bi-fold door from the hinges and track.
6. Locate the pivot pin. Using a pair of pliers, gently pull the nylon pin out of the door. This leaves an open hole you will need to fill.
7. Dab a small amount of wood glue into the open pin hole, and place the wooden dowel in the hole.
8. Using a small handsaw, saw off the protruding dowel flush with the door.
9. You will need to drill a new hole for the replacement pivot pin to reside. Using a power drill, drill a hole next to the old hole approximately the same depth.
10. Gently tap the replacement pivot pin into place using a hammer.
11. Rehang the bi-fold door, completing the pin replacement.
