Instructions
1. Open any windows in or near the closet. Wash the windows with a household cleaner and paper towels. Place a fan in the opening of the window to push the bad odor out and pull clean air inside.
2. Take all clothing and linens out of the closet. Inspect all clothing to see if there are any articles of clothing growing mold or mildew. Wash any clothes that are moldy with a detergent that contains bleach. Dry the clothing thoroughly. Look at the walls of the closet to see if there is any mold growing in the interior of the closet.
3. Mix 9 parts water with 1 part bleach and clean any mold growing in the closet. Use a hard bristle bush to remove any moldy areas. Dry the walls with a clean towel.
4. Sprinkle baking soda on the floor. Baking soda is often used to remove odors, because it contains sodium carbonate that neutralizes pH ranges that are too acidic, which causes the unpleasant odor. Allow the baking soda to neutralize odors for at least 15 minutes, then vacuum.
5. Place a dehumidifier in the closet, especially during hot, humid months. Musty smells caused by mold enjoy the hospitable environment brought on by humid weather.
