Typical Closet Size

Closet sizing is important when designing a home or room.

Closet size plays a big role in home storage, especially for people who must store a large quantity of clothing or miscellaneous items. Closet organization is one way to save space, so if you're planning a new closet or building a new home, it's important to know what the typical closet size is. Does this Spark an idea?

Interior Closet Heights

The interior of a closet is typically the height of the home's ceiling, due to the way the closet is constructed. It's built by setting up framed walls to create a separate closet area. The framed walls extend from the floor to the ceiling, so naturally the closet's interior height is the same as the surrounding room's ceiling. In almost every case there is no benefit to raising or lowering the height of the closet, as each involves extra work which yields no real benefits.

Closet Depth and Interior Space

The depth of the closet is the next measurement to consider. This is the interior space from the doors to the back wall. For a reach-in closet, this space is about 24 inches, allowing enough room to hang clothing on a rod extending across this space, parallel with the closet's door. Depths may range up to 30 inches in some cases if more space is necessary. However, making closets any larger than this is unnecessary because clothing only takes up so much depth, and therefore making the closet deeper doesn't increase the space available to hang clothes.

Closet Width

Many bedroom closets are between 6 and 8 feet long. This allows ample space to hang clothes. One person typically needs 4 feet of closet rod space to hang their clothes, although this will, of course, vary. In a 6-foot-wide closet, there is enough room for a 4-foot closet rod and 2-foot wide shelves. If you double stack the rods in an 8-foot wide closet, there is enough rod space for two people plus an additional 4 feet of space for shelves. Increasing the width adds more storage space than increasing depth. A good rule of thumb is that garments generally need about 1 inch of rod length to hang vertically in a closet.

Walk-in Closet Size

A walk-in closet is another type of closet entirely. It requires more space because the closet is designed to allow a person entry inside. This means additional floor space is left vacant so someone can walk, dress or move around inside the closet. Most people need about 3 feet of space to move around comfortably. Typical small walk-in closets also have at least one wall with a rod requiring 2 feet of depth. That means a grand total of 5 feet of space is necessary inside a walk-in closet. A 5-by-5-foot space is the minimum for walk-ins, although they range greatly in size; some are 15 feet-by-15 feet or wider.
