When it comes time to replace the door to your bedroom, you can buy a regular door and try to hang it yourself, which will require setting the hinges and latch and getting the door to fit just right. You can also buy a prehung door, which already opens, closes and latches within its casing, so you all you have to do is pop the whole casing into the doorway. Get a prehung door that's at least ¼-inch smaller than the opening all around. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Place the prehung door unit in the doorway, with the door closed. Make sure the hinges are on the side that's going to open inward.
2. Set a level against one side of the door unit. Slide shims in around the space between the casing and the surrounding doorway.
3. Open the door without moving the casing that's around it. Shoot screws out through the casing and into the surrounding frame. Place the screws approximately every 10 or 12 inches along the front and back sides of the casing.
4. Use a razor knife to cut off the extended portions of the shims.
5. Remove the middle screw from each hinge plate on the door casing, using your screw gun. Replace each one with a long wood screw, which should go beyond the casing and into the surrounding door frame.
