What you can do with your walk-in closet depends on how large it is and the layout of the closet, both in its shape and its location in the bedroom. Some walk-ins are placed along an exterior wall allowing for windows, while others are small boxes just barely large enough to turn around in. Mirrors
No matter what size your closet is, mirrors can help make it look larger. Add at least one full-length mirror to your closet along one of the walls, and decorate with smaller mirrors placed at head height in any available space. A tri-fold mirror that has a stationary panel in the middle and two wing panels with adjustable angles are a great addition, as it will help you see yourself from all angles, including the back, when you stand between the wings, making your closet into a full dressing room. For small walk-ins that don't have enough space for a tri-fold mirror, try removing the closet door entirely and placing a tall tri-fold mirror in front of the doorway on the bedroom side to act as a room screen. This will enlarge the closet a bit with an entryway dressing area and make accessing your closet simple without taking up much more floor space than is needed for a swinging door.
Central Storage
Don't limit yourself to storing clothing and essentials only along the walls. If you have a closet with plenty of open floor space at the center, add a cabinet in the middle of the floor for storing items that don't need to hang. Keep the center cabinet no taller than standard countertop height so it doesn't make the closet feel smaller. Add lighting, a chair and a makeup mirror if you like, or add a drop leaf to the cabinet's top to make a folding table for laundry. Much like a kitchen island, this central cabinet can be fitted with drawers or shelves and will provide a work area as well as additional storage space.
Closet Nook
If you don't need all the room in your closet for clothing storage, try converting the unused space into a small office, reading nook, yoga studio or other getaway. Install built-in wardrobe units along one wall to use for clothing storage. Include drawers, hanging rods and any other storage space you need. Fit the rest of the closet space with a small desk, a nest of floor pillows or a yoga mat, depending on your needs. Use furniture that has an open look to keep the room from feeling cramped. Glass-topped desk units or fold-down tables work well in small spaces. For a reading nook, you can create a built-in window seat-style bed, even if no window is available, by adding additional closet storage or bookshelves at each end of one wall, then installing a padded bench in between. Make sure to install appropriate lighting for your chosen closet purpose.
