Organize A Laundry Mud Room

Mud rooms are often found in homes of farmers or people who work outdoors.

Mud rooms provide an area to remove, store and take care of muddy shoes, clothing and even groom pets. They sometimes come with a drain in the floor to make clean up easier. Often, mud rooms are combined with a laundry room. This is because soiled, muddy or wet clothing can be cleaned immediately to avoid staining or mildew. Organizing a laundry/mud room is not a difficult task if you keep the primary use in mind. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sit a wood or plastic chair in the mud room, or place a bench inside the room if space allows. The seating provides family members with a place to sit down while removing muddy boots or work shoes.

2. Install sturdy hooks along the wall of the mud/laundry room. The hooks provide an area to hang wet raincoats, scarves, mittens or coats after a rainstorm or an afternoon of playing in the snow.

3. Place an umbrella holder near the entrance of your mud room. This can be used to hold wet umbrellas as well as to store baseball bats or other tall, skinny objects.

4. Install wire or plastic cubes or cubbies on the wall of the mud/laundry room. This provides an area to place wet shoes, sports equipment and other apparel that needs ventilation to dry properly. If you have children, make sure that there are cubes that they can reach. If it is difficult for them to put items in the proper place, it reduces the chance that they will put their belongings up correctly.

5. Hang a paper towel rack on the wall near the bench and place a trash can nearby. This allows family members use of the paper towels to help remove excess water after a storm or to remove excess mud from shoes and other clothing before washing or storing them.

6. Place machine washable rugs or rubber mats on the floor area. People using the mud room will often have wet or muddy shoes, and might slip upon entering a room with linoleum or no-wax floors. Rugs reduce this danger.

7. Install shelves above the washer and dryer units. This provides a place to store laundry detergents, softeners and other items needed for clothing care. High shelves provide a place to store seasonal items in plastic bins or containers, such as swimming pool toys, snow shoes and other seasonal gear.

8. Add a closet rod to your mud/laundry room. This provides a place to hang up clothing that you want to air-dry, holds extra coats and makes doing laundry simpler by holding extra hangers. You can shake out permanent press items from the warm dryer and then hang them up so they remain wrinkle-free.
