Build Dresser Drawers

Build Dresser Drawers

With basic carpentry skills and the right tools, you will be able to build or replace your own drawers. These steps will be handy if you are remodeling your house, fixing a broken drawer or building your own cabinets. You can make your own custom-designed dressers at a fraction of the cost of buying them, while adding a personal, creative accent piece to bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width and depth of the drawer. When taking measurements, consider the drawer slides. There are a large variety of drawer slides on the market, so you may want to purchase and install the slides in your cabinets before you build the drawers.

2. Cut the sides, front and back of the drawers from the lumber. Use the measurements from step one to measure out and cut your two sides, front and back of drawer. First, cut the lumber to the desired height of your drawer. Next, cut out the length to ensure that all four sides will be uniform in height.

3. Rabbet your joints to make a sturdy fit for drawer corners. Next, take your router and set its depth to about three-fourths of the width of your wood. Next, run the router along the left side and right side of both the face piece and your back piece.

4. Fit the pieces together. For the bottom of the drawer, you have a choice of either routing out a line the thickness of the bottom so it slips in when assembling, or you can install it directly to the bottom. Next, nail or screw your drawer sides together. Place wood glue at all joints and use clamps to hold them in place so that they are solid.

5. Install the bottom into slots routed around the drawer. After you have cut the height of the drawer, measure up from the bottom about one-half to three-fourth inch and draw a line the whole length of the board. Next, route out a slot half the depth of the wood and the thickness of the bottom; do this before you cut the sides to length. If you install directly to the bottom, turn the drawer over so you are looking at the bottom of it. Using the router, adjust it so that you will be routing out half the thickness of the wood around the inside of the drawer. Finally, glue and nail the bottom into this slot.
