Closet Systems That Do Not Attach To The Wall

A garment rack provides several kinds of clothes storage.

The secret to any well-organized closet is to have a variety of storage options for the different types of clothing. Create your own closet system that does not attach to the wall by mixing and matching hanging rails, drawers, shelves and other items of furniture found in the home and office. Does this Spark an idea?

Hanging Space

Rods from which to hang clothes are the mainstays of any closet system. Garment hanging racks are freestanding hanging rods, usually on wheels and sometimes with a shelf at their base. You can double the hanging space by attaching an extra rod halfway down the unit. Use over-the-door hangers to add hooks and rods to the top of your closet door for additional hanging space. Bring your closet into your bedroom by purchasing a freestanding wardrobe, which is an enclosed piece of furniture with doors and often has a few shelves as well as hanging rods. Many wardrobes also have a mirror on the inside of the door.

Drawers and Shelves

Chests of drawers in various sizes are suitable for storing folded items, such as sweaters, T-shirts, socks, underwear and other small items of clothing. Drawer units made of wood provide a dust-free storage space while wire units allow air to circulate through your clothing. Low bookshelves can stand safely against the wall. Use the shelves for your shoes and purses, and place your jewelry and other accessories in bowls on the top. Standalone storage units work especially well for shoes and are divided into cubes, each for one pair of shoes.

Hangers

Hang multi-use hangers and bags from your garment hanging rod to expand your clothes storage. Stepped clothes hangers hold three or more pairs of pants while tie racks with multiple tines hold several scarves and necklaces as well as ties. Hang a plastic shoe bag with multiple pockets from your rod. The pockets are usually large enough for one shoe, scarf or a pair of socks. Most of these shoe caddies are made of clear plastic so you can view their contents, however small.

Miscellaneous

Furniture items found in office supply stores are also useful in closets. A rolling cart with coordinated boxes can move around your closet as you rearrange your clothing. Filing cabinets provide enclosed storage for your folded clothing while an umbrella stand holds your yoga mat. If you store suitcases in the closet, use them to hold your out-of-season clothing. The key to any successful closet organization is to have a place for everything, even the small items, so select organizers for your drawers and attractive storage boxes for your shelves.
