Hang Interior Sliding Closet Doors

Installing a sliding closet door is a wise choice if you want to free up floor space. Sliding doors slide back, one over the other, to eliminate the outward-swinging of traditional doors. These doors install with minimal tools and skill required. Anyone with the ability to lift a heavy door will complete the installation with few problems. Plan on spending about three hours to finish this job. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove existing doors if necessary. Remove the hinge pins in swinging doors by tapping on the bottom of the pin with a screwdriver and hammer. Lift the doors out. Unscrew the hinge screws and remove the hinges themselves. In bifold doors, lift the doors up and off the tracks and set aside. Unscrew the track and mounting bracket with a power screwdriver and remove them from the doorway.

2. Place the mounting track for the sliding closet door in the center of the top, horizontal door jamb. Measure to find the center of the jamb with a tape measure and mark its location with a pencil or pen.

3. Screw the track to the door jamb using the screws provided with the sliding door and a power screwdriver. Secure the track to the jamb with all the provided screws, making sure each mounting screw is flush with the bottom of the track.

4. Install the sliding door guides in the center of the door jamb on the floor, directly below the sliding door track. Use a plumb bob to find the proper position for the guides. Place the top of a plumb bob string in the center of the sliding door track and allow the steel bob to settle over the floor. Where the bob settles is the proper position for the guide. Mark the position with a pencil and mount the guide by screwing it into the floor at the mark.

5. Insert the rollers into the top of the sliding door by pushing them into the pre-drilled holes and securing them with the provided hardware. If rollers fit into the bottom of the doors, install the rollers in the same way.

6. Grasp the sides of the first sliding door. Lift the door and position it in the track so the rollers glide along the inside of the track. Position the bottom of the door inside the track guides so it does not swing back and forth freely.
