Plan And Organize A Closet

Plan and Organize

The closet is not only where clothes are stored, but it is also where memories are safely tucked away. Planning and organizing a closet takes away some frustrations we encounter in everyday life by giving us the comfort of knowing exactly where everything is. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of three pairs of shoes. Add 3 inches to the measurement and cut enough pieces to place all your shoes on a shelf. If you have more than 24 pairs of shoes, change the width to 4 or 5 pairs of shoes or what it takes to organize your shoes. Remember to add 3 inches to the measurement.

2. Measure and cut 3 pieces of the lumber, according to the number of pairs of shoes you have and leaving at least 10 inches between the shelves. For example, if you have 21 pairs of shoes and each shelf will hold three pairs, each of the 3 pieces will have to be 80 inches long.

3. Place 2 of the pieces of lumber side-by-side. Measure from one and make a mark every 10 inches. Place the speed square on the marks, and draw lines across the width of the lumber. Apply glue to the edges of the shelves and secure them to the ends with the drywall screws.

4. Cut 2 more pieces of lumber half as tall as the last 2. For example, if the 2 pieces cut in Step 2 are 80 inches in length, make these two 40 inches. Place them side by side, measure and make marks that will divide the space evenly. Cut the shelves needed to fill the marks drawn. Apply glue to the ends of the shelves and secure them to the ends with the drywall screws. These shelves can be used to organize odd-sized items.

5. Place these units in the closet, measure the width of the inside of the closet and cut a shelf that length. Place the shelf on top of the shoe rack and secure a cleat on the wall opposite the shoe rack with the drywall screws, and let the shelf rest on it. Next, measure over from the shoe rack a fair distance to hang clothes that do not hang to the floor (e.g., shirts, skirts, jackets, etc).

6. Place the other piece of lumber from Step 2 on a worktable. Install a closet rod bracket at the regular height and another one under it allowing room for the clothes on the top rod. Use the screws that came with the rod brackets. Measure down from the top of the piece in Step 5 to the closet rod bracket and mark the end of the shoe rack. Install a closet rod bracket on that mark. Next, measure up from the bottom of the piece from Step 5 to the closet rod bracket and mark the end of the unit next to the shoe rack. Install a closet rod bracket on that mark. Determine the length of these rods and cut them to that length.

7. Place the new end with the closet rod brackets in the closet and space it using the rods. Secure the end to the top shelf that runs the full width of the closet. Install the 2 rods. Then measure and cut the last rod to run the rest of the width of the closet at the regular height.
