Make A Small Bedroom Into A Dressing & Sitting Room

Create a private dressing room in your home.

A dressing and sitting room is a must have if you have a shoe obsession, more clothes than you can wear each season and spend mounds of time getting ready for a night out. An extra, small bedroom is just the place in your home to create this personal space. Think Marilyn Monroe's dressing room when you design the space. Soft flowing materials make just the right covering for a makeshift closet and privacy screens create a concealed space to dress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear out the entire room to start from scratch. Remove furniture, curtains and closet doors. Paint the walls a soft, neutral color.

2. Measure the length of the wall to the left or right of the door. The side you choose depends on the location of the closet; choose the wall opposite the bedroom closet.

3. Install a curtain rod to span the length of the wall. Use an easy-to-install tension rod and place it 2 feet from the wall and 2 feet from the ceiling, attached to the two walls on either side of the wall. You are creating a new place to hang more clothing. Slide sheer curtain panels onto the rod.

4. Put two to three portable clothes racks in the space behind the panels.

5. Set up stackable, cube shoe organizers inside the bedroom closet. You may leave the top shelf in place for hat or handbag storage. Use 12 to 24 cube shoe organizers to maximize the space.

6. Hang a curtain in the same sheer material over the window. You can install blinds or a window shade on the window for extra privacy.

7. Set an ornate privacy screen in one corner of the room. This is an old-fashioned place to change your clothes in your new dressing room.

8. Put a dressing table, with a mirror along the wall adjacent to the door. Arrange the table near the window if possible to take advantage of the natural light. Additionally, put a floor lamp next to the table. Put a matching cushioned seat in front of the table.

9. Position a small settee or chaise lounge along the same wall as the privacy screen. Set a small table next to the settee with a decorative lamp. Use a soft, cushioned fabric for this piece of furniture to complement the gauzy curtains.

10. Add a freestanding mirror to the room. Choose one with an antique white wooden frame to keep with the decor.
