Organize A Utility Closet

Save time by organizing your cleaning supplies.

The utility closet is the hub of housekeeping maintenance. It is a place to store all of your cleaning supplies, brooms, mops, tools and vacuum cleaner. A utility closet that is organized and fully stocked will make cleaning easier and more efficient, and it will save time and money. Dedicate a small closet, an under-sink cabinet or laundry room to be the utility closet. After your closet is organized, you will be prepared to quickly pull out your vacuum cleaner, wipe up a spill or find a flashlight. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Gather all of your cleaning supplies and take inventory of which supplies and tools to stock in the closet. These might include vacuum cleaner, broom, dustpan, mop, buckets, cleaning solutions, cleaning caddy, garbage bags, paper towels, rags, gloves, scouring pads, sponges polish, ladder, duster, flashlight and simple tools.

2. Select a space to create your utility closet. A small closet works best. Clear everything out of the closet and start with an empty space.

3. Install pegboard along the walls and on the back of the door of the closet. Hang brooms and mops on the pegboards.

4. Place the largest item, such as the vacuum cleaner, into the closet and organize the supplies around it. Group like items together. Hang extra bags, duster, dustpan, gloves and cleaning rags on the pegboard. Create a section for frequently used tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, pliers or scissors. Use the floor space for large items such as buckets. Plan to use all of the walls and shelves for organizing your cleaning supplies.

5. Group cleaning solutions by room. Store all cleaning solutions in their original containers. Read the directions and warnings on the labels of all cleaning products. Mixing cleaning products can produce toxic fumes. Appropriately discard products that you no longer use. Dispose of old products at a hazardous waste collection center.

6. Create a cleaning caddy or bucket for each room in your home, such as a bathroom caddy, a kitchen caddy and a living room caddy. Place your cleansers, rags, garbage bags and a few tools in each caddy. Place your cleaning caddies on a shelf out of the reach of children.
