Trim Wood Shelves In A Home Closet

Adding trim to closet shelves can make the space more interesting.

Small details can really dress up areas of your home, and closets are no different from other areas. If your closet has bare wooden shelves, applying wooden mill work trim pieces to the front edge of each shelf will add an interesting decorative touch to your closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove any items that are on the closet shelves and place them out of the way of your work.

2. Stretch a tape measure across the front of the shelves you'll be adding trim to and record the width of each shelf. Measure the thickness, top to bottom, of each of the shelves.

3. Purchase trim to meet the dimensional needs.

4. Cut the trim with a saw to match the width of the shelf you'll be applying the trim to. Sand the ends of the trim with a medium-grade sandpaper.

5. Spread a thin bead of wood glue onto the back of the trim you'll be applying to the shelf's front edge. Place the mill work onto the shelf front. Hold the trim in place and nail to the shelf front with small finishing nails. Repeat for any additional shelves.

6. Paint or stain the trim and shelves if desired. Let the paint or stain dry completely before restocking the closet.
