Standard 5- and 6-foot Sliding Glass Doors
A 5-foot sliding door has a nominal size of 60 inches wide; a 6-foot door has a nominal width of 72 inches. Both are nominally 80 inches high. The exact height and width of a patio door frame depends on the manufacturer. It is imperative to follow the maker's instructions to create the proper-`size rough opening.
Custom Sliding Glass Doors
In addition to the stock 5- and 6-foot door widths, many manufacturers also sell both smaller and larger doors made to order. Custom sizes are generally special-order items.
Rough Opening and Nominal Size
A 6-foot door may be exactly 72 inches wide or smaller by 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Every door ships with manufacturer's instructions stating the appropriate dimensions of the rough opening. The rough opening will always be slightly larger than the door frame to allow the door to be installed straight, level, and square; thus assuring proper operation. Gaps between the frame and walls of the opening are filled with shims, and the opening itself hidden by finish molding.
