Fix a Kitchen Cabinet Door That Doesn't Close
A kitchen cabinet door that doesn't close is a nuisance that most people live with for a while before they finally start trying to figure out what the problem is. Instructions
1. Inspect the hinges of the cabinet door carefully. Check for gapes and hinges that are obviously bent or broken.
2. Compare the hinges on the door in question to other hinges in the kitchen to see how they differ from the others. For instance, do these hinges seem older than the others? Do they have paint on them, while the others don't?
3. Scrape off any paint that might be on the hinge. This can be done with a butter knife or sandpaper.
4. Loosen the hinges that are affecting the door closing. For a door that closes correctly on the bottom but not the top, loosen the top hinges. For a door that closes at the top, but not the bottom, loosen the bottom hinges. If neither end of the door closes, then loosen both sets of hinges. Do not take the hinges completely off, just loosen them quite a bit.
5. Use a screwdriver to tap the hinges in the direction in which they need to go. For a door that seems to extend too far to the right, tap the hinges to the left. If the door extends too far to the left, tap the hinges to the right. Hold the door in this newly adjusted place, and tighten the screws into place. If the door was only slightly crooked, this will solve your problem, and the door should close now.
6. Replace the set of hinges entirely if the above steps did not work. Sometimes hinges become bent or warped, and this affects their ability to hold a door closed at a proper angle. To do this, remove the old hinges. Fill the old screw holes with wood filler, and mount the door with the new set of hinges.
