Flooring Next to Patio Doors
Laminate flooring has been available for several decades, and the newer style allows it to be installed in virtually any room in the house that has a proper substrate. The key to proper installation of laminate flooring is to understand how the floor needs to be finished where it meets surfaces other than a straight wall, and doorways such as patio doors need extra care due to the possibility of water seepage than can ruin a laminate floor. Instructions
1. Install the last row of laminate flooring, stopping 1/2 inch from the bottom edge of the patio doors. Note that you will leave the standard 1/4-inch expansion gap on either side of the doors; the 1/2-inch gap is for the doorway only.
2. Measure the width of the patio doors and transfer your measurement to the strip of one-piece end molding.
3. Cut the end molding to the measurement, using a jigsaw or miter saw to ensure a straight cutting edge.
4. Apply silicone to the subfloor in the one half inch gap of the floor, taking care to cover the entire surface of the subfloor.
5. Run a bead of silicone onto the wide edge of the end piece where it will come into contact with the door.
6. Place the end molding into the floor gap, pressing the molding firmly against the patio door frame and firmly into the silicone on the subfloor.
7. Run a bead of silicone along the top seam of the one-piece molding where the molding meets the patio doors, taking care to fill any gaps with silicone.
8. Wipe off any excess silicone that is visible.
