Built-in bookshelves can go a long way in a small space.
If you have a small house, it can be difficult to keep things organized, but a few little things can go a long way when it comes to creating storage in a small home. Small houses often don't have a lot of basic storage areas such as large closets, so it's up to you to create space. Does this Spark an idea?
Maximize Space
Before you begin a major organization redo, maximize your existing space. Add pullout shelves and trays inside cabinets. Get a shoe organizer to hang over the back of the door to keep little items together in a small space such as the bathroom. Purchase special hangers that allow you to hang multiple items on a single hanger in an organized manner, and pick up a few storage containers--to hold items such as shoes or blankets--that you can hide under the bed.
Add Built-ins
If you have a free wall or just a few feet of space, add a built-in bookshelf or set of drawers. You can design a built-in yourself in a style you like. You can even build it yourself if you're the handy type and you keep it simple. If you're short on cash, or building isn't your thing, purchase prefabricated shelves from your local home improvement or retail store. You can leave them free-standing or nail them in place. Attach crown molding to the edges to make a set of bookshelves look like a single built-in piece.
Discover Hidden Spots
Small houses, like any other house, have hidden spots or areas you've never thought to use. If you have a basement with an open ceiling, for example, store longer items such as wrapping paper or material amid the ceiling rafters. Add shelves to the back of a deep closet to store shoes or other items, or get a trunk, fill it with everyday items and stick it in the odd corner that never gets used.
