Make A Girly Closet

Make your closet reflect your femininity.

While men dream of having a "man cave," women and girls dream of having the perfect closet. A "girly" closet is one that lets females appreciate their wardrobe and store their items properly. This means having "all the right stuff" to hold every item and give each item good visibility and accessibility. That's what a girl needs, so she can make just the right choices of clothing and accessories to look her best at all times. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the interior walls of the closet in her favorite color, a color that is considered "girly," such as pink or purple; or use neutral colors such as white or beige, so the closet color won't overshadow and compete with her wardrobe. Take the extra step to paint shelves in the same color as the walls to create a uniform look, or keep them in a white or beige so her clothes and accessories become the closet "stars."

2. Add mirrors so she can see herself and her attire. Glue square mirror panes to the back of the closet door or get a standard 4-foot-long mirror and attach it to the back of the closet door. Use multiple mirrors on accordion-fold closet doors so each panel is mirrored -- inside or on the outside door panels.

3. Personalize the mirrors with frosted-glass paint and stencils. Trace the letters of her name on a diagonal across the top of the mirror or running vertical along the left side of the mirror. Stencil the names and mimic the type fonts of fashion icons such as J. Crew, Vogue, Gucci, Tiffany, Essence and Sax Fifth Avenue on the mirrors.

4. Add ready-to-assemble shelves if none currently exist in the closet. Use the shelves to store one of a girl's most favorite things: shoes. Consider lining the interior of the shelves with fabric, adhered with spray adhesive glue. Go a step further. Use molding and custom-cut glass to create a see-through shoe cabinet.

5. Use curtains to give the closet a more light and feminine look as an alternative to closet doors. Turn lace or floral tablecloths into curtains for the closet by simply hemming one edge to insert a curtain rod, and attach it to the top of the wall or outer molding. Use matching fabrics or even scarves to create tiebacks for the closet curtains.

6. Create baskets for storing underwear, swimsuits, scarves and pantyhose. Look for inexpensive baskets at resale and discount stores. Spray paint each basket the same color to give them a custom-tailored look.

7. Add a counter top on top of bookshelves to use as a wardrobe preparation station if the closet is large enough. Use the counter top to mix and match outfits and choose the final outfit to wear, and the bookshelves as extra storage space for shoes, hats, sweaters and more baskets.

8. Use gift-wrap paper or adhesive drawer liner paper to create hatboxes. Cover plain brown boxes with the wrapping paper and use the drawer paper to line the interior of the boxes.

9. Carpet the closet floor with red carpet for a "Hollywood" look or pink carpet for a feminine look.
