Design A Laundry Room Closet

Finding room for a laundry closet makes washing clothes more efficient.

Doing laundry is easier if there's well-designed storage in the room. Placing dirty clothes, laundry supplies and clean laundry in proper places saves time. You can often find space for a closet beside the washer and dryer. But don't forget to look for room overhead or space in a nearby hallway. Plan your closet in detail, so you will use every square inch. Even a tiny space can be used for dryer sheets or an iron. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the space you can use for a closet. Figure out maximum length, depth and height. Examine the entire space to make sure a closet won't block a heating vent, door opening or other essential part of the room.

2. Use graph paper to design the interior of the closet. Envision the space with no doors. Draw sections for storing dirty laundry or supplies. Sketch a rod for hanging clothes coming out of the dryer. Create shelving space at the top of the closet. Plan to include a small chest of drawers inside the closet if you have room.

3. Select building materials. Plan to use 2-by-4 boards for the framework and drywall over it. Choose folding doors with solid or louvered panels. Select hardware brackets for shelving and appropriate tracking for the doors.

4. Purchase baskets and bins to organize the closet. Select neutral colors or those that blend with nearby areas of your home for the interior of your closet, especially if the open closet will be visible from a hallway or kitchen. Colors such as cream, pale yellow, light gray or taupe work well.

5. Design a clothes-folding table. Create a countertop hinged to the wall that you can pull down. Another option is a table on rollers that fits around the shelves when it's not in use. A folding table is yet another option. Take folded clothes to their designated bedrooms to avoid cluttering your closet.
