Clothes closets
of various types primarily contain clothes stored on hangers, which are hung from a rod incorporated into the closet. However, clothes closets also may include shelves and hooks for items such as shoes, ties, scarves and other accessories. Types
The most common types of residential clothes closets are built-in closets, stand-alone clothes closets and modular or custom-built closets. A combination of two or more of these types in the same home is not uncommon.
Built-In Closets
Built-in closets are essentially a small room for storing hanging clothes. Most have doors that close, but some use a curtain on a rod that parts down the middle.
Stand-Alone Closets
A portable stand-alone closet has value where needs may change such as a child's room or for adding closet space. You may find wooden ones that often are called wardrobes, and you also can purchase stand-alone clothes closets made of heavy-duty plastic, canvas and similar materials.
Modular or Custom-Built Closets
A late-20th century and early-21st century variation is the modular, or custom-built clothes closet, which often includes storage space for items in addition to clothing. That has led to an entire industry of custom-design storage-space companies.
Other
One also may find clothes closets, usually of a larger scale, in places like office suites and restaurants. Clothes closets in business settings such as this often are full-sized small rooms containing clothes-hanging fixtures.
