One of the most neglected areas of the home in terms of decor is the closet. While much time and money is spent improving the storage efficiency and capacity of the closet, how aesthetically pleasing that arrangement is not too often a large consideration. Yet, the importance of the aesthetics in such a situation is often underestimated. The upkeep of the organizational system is tied in to whether the closet looks organized, and that requires some attention paid to the aesthetics, particularly the paint chosen to cover the walls. Does this Spark an idea?
The Right Colors for the Closet
Closets usually have few or no windows. They also are usually smaller than other spaces in the home. Therefore, especially when filled with clothing, closets tend to feel closed in and cramped. To combat this, paint the walls with a light color, such as white, off-white, a pastel shade or a tinted neutral. Tinted neutral is basically an off-white with a hint of another color, such as pink, green, yellow or blue. The hint of color is barely noticeable and usually only becomes apparent when an untinted neutral or white is placed next to it. The tinted neutral has the versatility of a regular neutral, while conveying a slightly different attitude.
Matching a Closet to a Dark Room
If you have painted your room a darker shade and wish for your closet to match the room to give the space a more unified look, consider using the darker color as an accent or going with a lighter shade of the same color. Consider stenciling or sponging the darker color in certain areas or the closet, or using hangers with the darker color. Alternatively, if you are using cubbies, paint interior parts of the cubbies in the darker color.
Shared Closet Ideas
If people are sharing a closet, whether they are siblings or spouses, paint can help define the individual spaces. Still keep the colors light, but use different shades for areas of the closet that are specific to each person. This can work especially well if children are involved, as disputes over who needs to clean and organize what can be reduced. Let the kids choose the color for their side of the closet so that they are more likely to want to use it. Let the paint scheme carry through to the colors of the storage solutions such as racks, shelves and drawers, as the walls can are often obscured by clothing, shoes and boxes.
