Solve your closet problems with some basic organizing techniques.
Closet storage and organizing is a constant battle. Clothes that are out of style or don't fit, boxes of shoes and bags of scarves are just a part of the problem. Solving the closet disaster problem is possible with just a little time and some basic organizing techniques. Once complete, your clothes will be sorted, stacked and easy to find. Does this Spark an idea?
Use the Space
Install shelves and rods to be easily accessible.
While closet size may be a problem, it can be solved easily by making use of every inch available. Use organizers that slide over the closet door or hooks that can be attached to the inside of the door to hang belts, ties, scarves and even shoes. Measure the space inside the closet. Install multi-level rods on either the back wall or on the side of the closet. Shelves can be installed on the wall or hang from a main rod. The more space you use, the more you can fit inside the closet.
Declutter
Eliminate anything that doesn't belong in the closet.
Too many things in your closet can be one of the biggest problems you will face. Empty out the entire closet, sorting the contents as you go. Make separate piles for each type of clothing, like blouses, skirts, pants and shirts. Maintain a separate place to put items of clothing that no longer fit and that can go to a charity. Select what needs to be in the specific closet you are working in and eliminate anything that doesn't belong. For example, linens and towels belong in a linen closet and not in a clothes closet. Decluttering the closet will give additional space to those items that belong.
Hangers and Shelves
Multi-level closet rods allow clothes to be seen easier.
Hangers should be placed on the closet rods based on length of the garment. Shirts, blouses, jackets, slacks and skirts can all be placed on multi-level rods with the shorter garments on the top rod and the longer slacks and skirts on the bottom. Dresses and long coats should be hung from a separate rod that is placed high in the closet with nothing underneath. Shelves can be used to hold folded sweaters or shirts with the addition of shelf spacers in between each stack to keep them straight.
Storage Boxes
Use storage boxes to help organize your closet.
Storage boxes are a useful tool in the organization of any closet. Clear plastic boxes allow for easy identification of contents. Plastic shoe boxes, for example, allow you to see the style and color of the shoe inside without opening each box. Solid boxes made from plastic or heavy cardboard allow seasonal clothes and miscellaneous items to be stored out of site until needed. Label clearly any nontransparent boxes or cartons. Photos can also be taken and taped to the front of the box to identify shoes, hats or purses. Place boxes on high shelves if not used often and on low shelves near the floor if more ready access is needed.
