Basic pieces like a white shirt and black suit can be used separately.
Learning to mix and match your clothing has several advantages. You are able to increase the versatility of your wardrobe without having to buy new pieces, which is helpful for those on a budget. You will be able to change your look with a fairly small wardrobe. You have the opportunity to express your own creativity and individuality in the way that you choose to put pieces together. With some basic rules for building your wardrobe, you will be on your way to saving time and money by creating chic looks through mixing and matching.
Instructions
1. Choose black, brown or navy as your color base. One of these three colors will be the anchor of your versatile wardrobe.
2. Buy basic pieces in your chosen color, and in white and denim as well. You should have solid t-shirts, tank tops and button downs in your base color, in white and, if you choose, in grey. You should have slacks and work skirts in your dark base color. Buy a dark pair of slim-fitting denim jeans, which can transition from day to night.
3. Acquire more tops than bottoms. Most attention is paid to the top half of a person's physique, so wearing the same top too often will make it obvious that your wardrobe is limited. However, wearing the same bottom with different tops will give the appearance of a large, varied wardrobe.
4. Sprinkle in tops with color and patterns with solid bottoms. After you have your basics, buy a few tops that have color and/or pattern to use with solid bottoms and jackets.
5. Avoid mixing patterns unless you are adventurous with your fashion. As a rule, plaid, polka dots and stripes should all be paired with solids, not each other. However, mixing brown and black, and black and navy is considered chic, whereas in the past it was a faux pas.
6. Mix up your jewelry with your outfits to add a pop of personality and versatility. If you want a mix-and- match wardrobe, buy some statement pieces. Mixed with different outfits these will change a day look to a night look.
7. Embarce seasonless dressing. In recent years, the idea of seasonless dressing has taken the fashion world by storm. No longer are shorts, short skirts and tank tops relegated to summer. Wear your shorts with tights in the fall/winter. Pair your tanks and dresses with boots and cardigans once it gets cold. Lose the extra layers when the weather turns warm again.
