Interesting hardware can change the whole character of a door.
If you want your closet threshold to look a little more interesting and show your personal taste better than a normal closet door, you have several options. From painting to cool fabric panels and curtains to glass, your closet door can add to the decor of your bedroom, not simply be neutral to it or detract from it. Does this Spark an idea?
Fabric Paneling
Even if you don't want to replace your existing closet door, you can still achieve a whole new look by using fabric. On a louvered door, or one that has slats, thread a panel of fabric about the width of the slats through the top slat from the back and then around under the bottom slat. If your door is more traditional, either affix fabric panels to separate boards and mount the boards to the door or attach the fabric to the door itself.
Shoji Doors
Shoji doors are in some ways like typical French doors in that they are doors with grid lattice work with panels inside the lattice. The difference between French doors and shoji doors is that shoji doors have paper paneling where a French door has glass or plexiglass paneling. Also unlike French doors, the paper panels will prevent passers-by from seeing inside your closet.
Pocket Doors
The name of this type of door explains its function: They slide into "pockets" in the wall. Pocket doors combine the space-saving footprint of the typical sliding closet door with the easy access of traditional swing closet doors. There are a few styles that you can choose for your pockets doors. Primarily, the choices are whether the door will be single or a double door and whether it will be solid or in a French door style.
Cosmetic Changes
Consider changing the character of your closet doors by painting them in an interesting color with an interesting finish, such as antiquing or liming, and changing the hardware to something more interesting than the simple knob, handle or pull. If you don't like painting, use wall decals on the closet doors.
