Closet size is a factor in planning your home and storage options.
Closets are important for storing clothing and other items in the home. When designing a closet, the size relates to what is being stored and how much you need to store. The size of your closet depends also on the size of your home and how many people use the closet. Does this Spark an idea?
Closet Width
The width of the closet depends on how much space you desire. Typically, one person requires around 4 feet of space to hang clothes, which means a width of 4 feet is adequate for a closet in a single bedroom. When the bedroom is home to two people, as in a master bedroom, a closet width of 8 feet is adequate, which allows room for an 8-foot closet rod and a shelf on top. Decrease the size if you have fewer clothes, and increase it if you want to add shelves or drawers in the closet.
Closet Height
The height of the closet will almost always be the height of the interior room ceilings. Closets are framed inside of a room by building an enclosed space in the room. The closet walls are framed right in the room and installed from floor to ceiling. Therefore most closet ceilings are 8- or 9-feet tall, depending on how tall the home's ceilings are, which allows lots of room over the closet rod for shelves if the rod is set at the normal 45 inches from the floor.
Closet Depth
Minimal closet depth is 18 inches, and the maximum is 24 inches, which is ideal for clothes hanging as most shirts, pants and jackets take up 2 feet of depth. Increase this size to 28 inches for larger coats and bulkier items or to increase the storage space underneath and above the closet. Any normal bedroom closet will not benefit greatly from increasing the depth if most of the space is occupied by a vertically hanging closet rod because most of the easily accessible space is taken up only by the width of your garments. This is not true for walk-in closets, however.
Walk-in Closet Sizing
The walk-in closet is a different breed. It is actually another storage room in which shelves and clothing rods are hung. Walk-in closets must be large enough to allow a walking path of around 3 feet, and the walls must be long enough to house the shelving and closet rods. Allow for 24 to 28 inches of depth on the back wall with at least 3 feet in front of this space, which makes a total of 5 1/2 feet for the depth. The length depends on how much you wish to store. Walk-ins are typically 6-feet wide and up to 12-feet wide in some cases, depending on what you need and the space you are working with. An ideal size is 6 x 8 feet, allowing space for an 8-foot closet rod or two 4-foot double rods and a 4-foot tall hanging rod for jackets and coats. The rest of the space is set aside for cabinets and shelving, which are typically 7 inches high for shoes and 18 inches high for boxes. Shelving is also 13 1/2 inches wide.
