Redo A Small Closet

Redo a small closet, and increase your space.

The main problem posed by a small closet is obvious -- the lack of space. When you have simply too much to go into such a small space, one way to create more room is installing double closet rods. These rods stack on top of each other, doubling the room you have. After you redo your closet, go out and splurge on a new outfit. You'll have room for it in your remodeled closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear out the clothing and other items in the closet, and remove the closet rod by unscrewing the closet-rod supports with a power screwdriver and taking the rods down.

2. Install the first closet rod. Measure 80 1/4 inches from the floor, and draw a horizontal mark with a pencil and ruler there. Measure 12 inches from the back wall, and make a vertical mark that intersects the horizontal mark. This tells you exactly where the closet support bracket needs to go. Repeat this process on the other side of the closet, using the same measurements.

3. Make another mark 39 1/4 inches from the floor and 12 inches from the back wall on both sides of the closet for the other set of brackets below the first brackets. Make this set of marks directly above the other. Now you have four marks for two sets of closet support brackets and two rods.

4. Install drywall anchors on your marks if there are no studs. Drill a pilot hole on each mark. Tap one plastic drywall anchor into each hole with a small hammer. Place a closet bracket on the center of the cross mark, and drive a mounting screw through the bracket mounting hole with a power screwdriver. Repeat this process to install brackets on all four marks.

5. Measure the distance between both brackets with a tape measure. Cut two 1 1/4-inch wood dowels or similar closet rods to this length. Set the dowels in the two mounting brackets.

6. Mount angled closet support brackets for rods that are more than 34 inches long. Find a stud on the back wall by knocking along the wall. Position an L-shaped support bracket 80 1/4 inches up from the floor. Mount the bracket to the wall with the provided mounting screws and a screwdriver. Set the top rod in place. Repeat the process for the bottom closet rod, setting the support bracket 39 1/4 inches from the floor.
