Donate your bridesmaid dress so someone else can get use out of it.
You know that bridesmaid dress "you can totally wear again"? You know you never will. But that shouldn't stop you from letting others take a look at it and see if they have an occasion for it. Formal gowns are too beautiful to throw away, so look into donating your dress to projects that will find them a new home -- one that has use for them, such as for prom or other formal school dances. Donation spots for gowns are located around the Chicago area. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Gather the dress or dresses you wish to donate. Most projects in the Chicago area that accept dress donations request that your donated dress be appropriate for girls ages 15 to 18 and the skirts be no shorter than tea length.
2. Prepare your dress for donation. Have your dress cleaned before you donate it. Dresses should be new or gently worn; don't donate a dress that is close to falling apart. They should also be no more than five years old, so they are still in line with current trends.
3. Choose your preferred donation site. The Glass Slipper Project and Princess Closet are available to a larger area in and around Chicago, but if you're near Evanston, the Women's Club of Evanston (WCOE) provides dresses to senior girls at Evanston Township High School who otherwise would be unable to attend their prom.
4. Donate your dresses. Glass Slipper takes mail-in donations to the project's volunteers in the Chicago suburb of LaGrange. Also, a shop in Mokena -- the Pink Slip Boutique -- offers 10 percent discounts to anyone donating a dress to Glass Slipper, and you can drop off the dress at the boutique. Princess Closet and WCOE accept in-person donations at specified places in and around Chicago; see their websites for information.
