Design A Closet For A Narrow Area

Proper organization helps when designing a closet.

Making use of every space available in your home is an effective way to stay organized and clutter free. Narrow areas such as those under stairways or in an attic, or preexisting closet space can be converted to hold the maximum number of items with a minimal amount of material. Narrow spaces may not seem like they offer much storage room, but by using a few decorating tricks and the length of only one wall, the space is instantly transformed into a walk-in closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height, depth and width of the area using a tape measure. Knowing the dimensions of the space will help you decide whether to use closet rods or shelves.

2. Maximize space by hanging clothes, and install a double closet rod. Judge the location of each rod by hanging clothing on them, then adjusting each rod's height accordingly. Hanging shirts on the top rod and pants on the bottom rod will effectively double the space. It will also prevent items of various lengths from dragging on the floor, which keeps the floor space open for storage.

3. Hang narrow shelves on one wall. Typical home decor shelves are 8 inches wide and come in a variety of lengths. They are wide enough to accommodate storage bins or baskets where you can store your belongings.

4. Place a full-length mirror on the shortest wall in the area. Mirrors make any room seem larger than it actually is. Full-length mirrors, in particular, are long and narrow, much like the closet area itself.

5. Add lighting to the area. Extra lighting may include a lamp, battery-operated touch-lights or extra overhead lighting. No matter what form of light you use, it should illuminate the entire length of the closet area.
