Remove A Closet Door

Sometimes the best repair for an old closer door is to replace the door completely. Closet doors often are not built with strong materials and they get plenty of abuse. Most closet doors in homes today are either sliding or bi-fold doors. Removing either type of closet door is a straightforward process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Sliding Closet Door

1. Open the front closet door panel halfway. Grab the panel on each side with your hands and lift the panel straight up into the upper tracks. Swing the bottom of the panel toward you while angling the top rollers out of the track. Remove the door panel from the opening and set it aside.

2. Slide the rear closet door panel halfway into the opening. Grab the sides of the door panel, and lift straight up while pushing the bottom of the panel toward the closet with your foot. Pull the top rollers out of the upper track and remove the door panel from the opening.

3. Locate the screws securing the upper track to the top of the door jamb. The screws usually are in between the door channels for the rollers. Remove the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver and remove the track from the opening.

4. Remove the screws securing the bottom guide to the center of the floor using a Phillips head screwdriver. if your sliding closet door uses a bottom track rather than a guide, remove the bottom track.

Bi-Fold Doors

5. Open the bi-fold door to the fully open position. Bi-fold doors consist of two panels that join in the middle using hinges. Locate the upper pivot bracket for both panels. The pivot bracket is the portion inside the upper track and connects to the corner of the panel nearest the side jamb.

6. Loosen the screw securing each pivot bracket with a flat head screwdriver. Grasp the folded door at the sides with both hands. Lift up and pull the bottom of the panels toward you. Pull down to remove the top pivots from the track. Set the door panel out of the way.

7. Remove the screws securing the upper track to the top of the door opening. Remove the screws securing the lower pivot bracket to the floor.
