Kitchen Pantry Design Ideas

Kitchen pantry's can be well-designed storage spaces.

Nearly every home has one, but chances are good that the one in your house is an unorganized mess. Don't fret! The standard home pantry, whether a small walk-in space or something more akin to a large cabinet, is generally not the most well-designed space in the kitchen. Shelves are really the only standard kitchen pantry element, but bad or drab standard design does not have to mean an eternally messy pantry. Does this Spark an idea?

Organize

Categorize the objects to be stored in the pantry and consider how they might be better organized. Good pantry design relies on good organization. Good organization starts with categorizing the foods inside the pantry and storing like foods together in a way that makes sense. Better organization means more productive space, which is key to making the pantry work for you.

Containers

Purchase containers to store foods in on pantry shelves for pantries of all sizes. Large or small, good pantry design benefits from the use of stackable containers, a lazy Susan and can organizers. External bins for products that are not pantry musts, such as bread and potatoes, are alternatives to trying to stuff too much into small pantry spaces. Pantry design focused on making available space more productive should skip the round containers, with the exception of what is placed on the lazy Susan because round bins equal wasted space.

Use the Door

The pantry door is the most underutilized portion of the pantry, next to the floor. Walk-in pantries have freestanding, hinged doors that are often ignored when designing the pantry. Install an adjustable shelving system on the pantry door for smaller items, such as cans. These shelving systems use wire or plastic baskets. Home owners looking to use this sort of system should remember never to overfill baskets hung on doors as this system is subject to the weight the door is capable of holding.

Use the Floor

The pantry floor is a storage space that many homeowners overlook or avoid. The pantry floor can be used to store paper products, cleaning supplies, pet food or potatoes. Home owners looking to avoid sanitation risks should use storage bins for food products that will be placed on the floor.

Freestanding

Small homes or apartments without pantry space should skip the remodel and pick up a freestanding pantry. Freestanding pantries are available in a variety of materials and bring additional space where needed. This pantry design is also useful for home owners in need of more pantry space, or those who want to install a pantry in other rooms, such as the laundry room, basement, sun room or office.
