Make A Cube Organizer

Make a Cube Organizer

The key to an organized home is keeping everything compartmentalized and in its place. One option for such storage is a cube organizer -- groupings of cubes that create a user-defined configuration. Versatile and decorative, this modular storage solution can be designed and customized for any space in the house. In a mudroom or entryway, a cube organizer is ideal for shoes and baskets filled with hats, gloves and other daily clutter. In a playroom, the cubes serve as the perfect organizational tool to keep toys and games in their place. The possibilities for these clutter-busting cubes are endless. For a do-it-yourself version, roll up your sleeves and let's go. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase unfinished wood cubes from an arts and crafts store or unfinished furniture store. Select sizes (wood cubes are typically found in single, double, triple and quadruple forms) based on the size of the modular cube organizer you desire and that which will fit into the space you are organizing. Think vertical -- build the cubes from the wall to ceiling for a more functional organizational configuration.

2. Select a paint or stain finish for the cube organizer. Fill gaps or holes with wood filler and allow to dry. Lightly sand the cubes, wipe away dust residue and apply two coats of either paint or stain, allowing the finish to dry before applying the second coat. If the finished product will be white or cream, apply two coats of paint primer before the paint, allowing dry time in between coats. Let the cubes dry before handling.

3. Configure the wood cubes into the desired configuration. Attach the cubes to each other from the inside with a drill and screws. Consider putting wheels on the bottom of the cube organizer for easy transport. Do this by attaching wheel brackets onto the four corners of the unit and screwing on the wheels.

4. Fill some of the cubes with storage baskets to keep clutter at bay. Use wicker, clear plastic containers, cardboard photo boxes and tins for decorative interest. Whether you create a simple four-cube unit or build an entire wall of cubes, this system will look great and keep everything in its place.
