Design Ideas For A House Closet

A well-designed closet can make it easier to find items later.

Whether you're building a new closet from scratch or redesigning an old space, designing each closet in your house before storing can save you time and money and keep you organized later. Closets inside houses store everything from food to linen to clothes. Keep the purpose of your closet in mind as you design it. Does this Spark an idea?

Add Lighting

To keep your closet from becoming a dark pit, add lighting to your closet design from the beginning. Depending on the size of your closet, place at least one light or a row of lights in the ceiling to give you quality overall lighting. If your closet is deep, leave space for light on the back and side walls. You can also add lights to the floor or around any doorways so that every item in your closet is visible.

Keep It Visible

One of the most important rules of closet design is to keep everything visible. Use shelving units in pantries and linen closets to help make a space more usable and to keep everything in sight. Use small stair-step type shelving to hold spices, shampoos and other small items so you can see them at all times. If total visibility all the time isn't an option, install roller baskets or shelves that slide out to make items easier to find.

Box It Up

To keep your closet clutter free in the long run, create space for boxes or drawers in your closet design. Add drawers in clothing closets, or use bins or boxes in different sizes to store in a pantry or linen closet. Boxes and bins can help keep smaller items, like makeup or boxed goods, more organized in large spaces. Organize similar items together, and label the boxes or drawers to keep items separated and organized in the long term.
