Design Considerations for a Girl's Room
1. Consider the needs of a little girl years from now. As an active teenager, her room will be her sanctuary. Provide her with some of the conveniences she might need for health and beauty or to entertain friends. Use a tape measure to determine and record the exact square footage of the room.
2. Evaluate the window situation in the space. Is the natural light adequate? Check the windows to determine the type and condition of the window frames. Are they energy efficient? Does one window have a better view than another? The type and size of the windows will determine your decorating options for the windows.
3. Consider adding a bathroom in a girl's room if space allows. This is a wonderful convenience for a young woman who desires privacy. If the thought of double-locked doors makes you pause, then use swinging café doors to separate the bathroom from the bedroom.
4. Plan for as much closet space and storage space as possible when designing a girl's room. A girl's need for closet space and additional storage seems never ending. Built-in shelves and cubbies in the girl's closet can be used for doll and toy storage while she is young and can be used well into the future as storage for her many pairs of shoes and accessories. Consider buying a platform bed with drawer space for storage.
5. Envision the room's need for electrical outlets for the many high tech devices that may someday be used in a girl's room. A multiple outlet socket near a desk for studying will be a welcome addition during the years of schooling. A comfortable space for reading, such as a window seat with shelves for books would also be very convenient in a girl's space. Rely on classic design elements that can stand the test of time. When selecting paint color or wallpaper, use a critical design eye to imagine how that paper or color will work in five years when the girl's tastes will no doubt have changed and matured.
