Help With Decluttering My House

A well-organized closet will help you find things faster.

A cluttered home creates stress in your life. You may find working in your home impossible or have trouble sleeping at night. Clutter also makes your home look messy regardless of how often you actually clean. You can take steps to kill the clutter yourself or can hire a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Organizing

To keep your home clutter free, everything you own must have its own place. Some things, such as bathroom towels, clothing, shoes and linens already have a natural place in your home. For other items, such as loose paper, household tools or office supplies, you must designate a place. Set aside a drawer in your kitchen to hold loose items like pens and scrap paper. Store seasonal items, such as a Christmas tree or holiday decorations, out of sight in the garage, attic or in a storage shed. Use a bookshelf for books, records and magazines and a toy box for kid or pet toys.

What to Toss

Accumulating too many personal items will lead to clutter. Go through every room in your home periodically and determine what you can throw away or donate to charity. Do not keep anything you have not used in several months. Pay special attention to loose paper. Mail, old magazines, paid bills and printed pages end up cluttering kitchen countertops, desks and tables. Go through every piece of paper and either file it in a filing cabinet or throw it away. Always shred paper containing any personal information. Go through each closet, and donate anything you do not wear or use.

Products

Organizational products eliminate clutter, even in small efficiency apartments. Storage bin and baskets organize and hide personal care products in the bathroom. An under-the-sink organizer will help with cleaning product clutter. A shoe rack and multiple hook hangers free up space in small closets. You can purchase organizational tools at national retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target or in specialty shops like The Container Store.

Professional Help

For a fee, a professional organizer will come into your home and create an organizational plan. These tailored plans will fit your home's size and capacity perfectly. The organizer will purchase and install any tools you need. Many organizers also build personalized storage units for closets or cabinets. You will pay a per hour or per project rate for their services. You can use an independent company, but organizational specialty stores often staff professional organizers.
