What Are The Average Sizes And Dimensions Required Of A Closet Pole

Closet poles are used for hanging clothes and can be found at lumber supply stores.

If you have an empty closet that needs a new closet pole, or want to add one to an existing closet and free up shelf space, begin searching for one at a lumber supply store. Homeowners will find that they come in several sizes. Does this Spark an idea?

Length

Measure your closet from one interior side to the other for an overall minimum length. Closet poles also can be cut with a handsaw to modify it to the length needed. Average lengths for sale include 48 inches for narrow closets and 72 inches for wide closets. Some closet poles also are adjustable, ranging from 72 inches to 120 inches.

Diameter and Width

The width of a standard wooden closet pole is 1-3/8 inches. This is thick enough to support the weight of several garments. Brackets to support the pole also are made to fit this diameter. The pole usually sits inside a cup-shaped groove. Metal closet poles typically are thinner, usually around 1-5/16 inches, because metal is a stronger material.

Hanging Height

Hanging a closet pole depends on what will be hanged. As a general rule, hang the pole at 42 inches high for pants and shirts. Hang the pole at 60 inches high or more, depending on the closet and storage space available, for coats and longer garments such as dresses. If you want to hang two poles, one over the other, in a tall closet consider hanging each pole at least 42 inches apart.

Depth from Wall

Clothing typically requires up to 24 inches of space from a rear closet wall and the closet door for a closet pole to properly hang them. In closets that are extremely narrow, try to allow for at least 12 inches on each side of the pole to hang items.
